A Reverence for the Game's Greatest Design Traditions

Origins Golf Design was founded in 1999 by Todd Eckenrode and Charles Davison with a singular focus:

to design, renovate, and restore golf courses in a manner that honors the land, the history, and the integrity of the game.

Todd learned the game at Pasatiempo Golf Club — Dr. Alister MacKenzie's revered Santa Cruz design — and that early immersion in Golden Age architecture has shaped every project since. A competitive amateur player, U.S. Public Links Medalist, and ASGCA member, Todd brings a player's understanding to every design decision, paired with a landscape architect's eye for how a course should sit on its land.

The firm's work spans renovation and restoration of classic California courses, master planning, and new course design across the western United States and internationally. What unites every project is a commitment to courses that play well, age well, and stand as worthy additions to the long lineage of great American golf architecture.

"Having learned the game at one of the world's great original designs, Pasatiempo Golf Club, designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, ingrained in me a deep reverence for courses built in this era, the Golden Age of Golf Course Architecture, and a never-ending curiosity for what makes them special."

— Todd Eckenrode, ASGCA

Our Approach

Rennovation

Improving playability, modernizing infrastructure, and addressing the realities of contemporary maintenance — while protecting the soul of the original design. Renovation done well is invisible to the casual eye and deeply felt by those who know the course best.

Restoration

Returning a classic course to the spirit of its original architect's intent — bunker shapes, green contours, strategic features — informed by historical research and respect for the original design vocabulary. The goal is never to copy the past, but to honor it.

New Course Design

Drawing on the principles of the Golden Age — strategic variety, natural integration with the land, design that asks the player to think — to create courses that feel as if they could have always been there, even on the day they open.
